Netflix Eyeing Total of About 700 Original Series, Movies in 2018

TV shows appear to outpace Netflix's original movies, though it has a good number of those, as well.

The company's CFO David Wells was speaking on Tuesday (February 27) at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in San Francisco when he revealed the news. Having choices is great but having choices comes at a cost and we might be seeing that once everyone comes out with their own original content.

All this spending is being matched by increased marketing to promote that spending. He added that he expects the company to offer 700 original titles through the service by the end of the year, with around 80 of them being made outside the United States, following the success of shows such as Dark, which is made in Germany. Still, it's easy to see the appeal of original content - customers may have multiple options for acquiring a piece of licensed content, but Netflix Originals can only be found (legally) at a single destination: Netflix.

And because of that, Netflix might be smart to dedicate more and more t0 original content. When asked about how much spending on content is enough for Netflix, Wells said "there's no magic line where you know exactly where you are". "We don't necessarily have to do it ourselves", he explained.

Netflix reportedly closed out 2017 with around 117 million subscribers around the world. There are an estimated 700 million broadband users worldwide, excluding China.

The streaming giant recently inked a five-year exclusive deal with Glee producer Ryan Murphy in February, and a multi-year production deal with Scandal, Grey's Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder creator Shonda Rhimes.
