Woods and Stricker named vice captains of US Ryder Cup team

While Woods will make the Honda Classic his third official PGA Tour event since returning to competition following his fourth back surgery (and his fourth tourney overall, including December's Hero World Challenge), a Ryder Cup start remains a consideration for later in the season. But he'll be in Paris this fall no matter what.

US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has named Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker as two of his vice-captains for the 2018 contest at Le Golf National.

Woods thereby joins Steve Stricker and Davis Love III as assistants to Furyk, with the plan to name a further two.

"The Ryder Cup is incredibly special to me", said Woods. "Arguably one of the best players of all-time, what Tiger has really brought to the table for our vice captains is a great knowledge of Xs and Os". 'I saw the fire, how excited he was to play alongside him as a team-mate, as a partner in foursomes and fourball matches'.

He said: 'When you look at that team room (at Hazeltine), a lot of them became professional golfers because they wanted to emulate Tiger Woods, so to have him in that team room, being that humble guy who is ready to serve means a lot'. The U.S. won in a rout, 17-11.

The vastly experienced Stricker will serve as vice captain for a third time, having also been given the honour at Gleneagles in 2014.

"Woods" appointment is his second as a Vice Captain, as he debuted in this role at Hazeltine. He was also an assistant to Stricker on last year's winning Presidents Cup team.

Asked last week about the possibility of playing and serving as an assistant, Woods said he'd be open to it. Furyk reiterated the idea hasn't been ruled out.

"I'd like to do what's best for Tiger", Furyk added. "I want to do what's best for the team and that would be a bridge we would cross when we got there".

Woods' role and near-obsession as a 2016 USA vice captain has been well documented, with Tiger staying up late to tinker with lineups and analyze potential pairings long before the matches began.

United States captain Jim Furyk added the duo's names to that of Davis Love III as part of his team as the U.S. attempt to defend the trophy and win for the first time on European soil since 1993.
