Rivalry Resumed: Sonic the Hedgehog movie races ahead of Super Mario Bros

Everyone's favorite blue blur will star in his own feature film next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie will open on November 15, 2019.

Sonic the Hedgehog has spanned several iterations from Sega consoles in the 1990s to mobile fan and absorption into the Nintendo Mario Brothers video game universe. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being, but here's hoping we get a bit of Big the Cat.

Renewing a rivalry with Mario that stretches back as far as the the halcyon days of SEGA Mega Drive vs SNES, Sonic the Hedgehog tells the story of a warp speed hedgehog, who collects rings, performs loop-the-loops, and jumps spikes, all with the aim of thwarting megalomaniac villain, Doctor Robotnik. But, the casting process should speed up now that a concrete release date has been set.

Moritz is producing the project, with Deadpool director Tim Miller executive producing.

Gamers are also looking forward to another film next year that will use a CGI and live-action mix, "Detective Pikachu,"based on the popular "Pokemon " character". Jeff Fowler will direct the film, making his directional debut with this project. The series had sold over 80 million physical copies of games and over 350 million units across packaged software and mobile downloads.

Paramount is keeping mum on the film's storyline.

How the filmmaker's translate the celebrated series to the big screen remains to be seen.

It's too early to say at this stage.
