Military honors three slain in shooting

Wang was killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School along with 16 other people. On the day of the shooting, he was wearing his uniform for JROTC; the cadet dreamed of attending the prestigious military academy West Point after graduation.

According to Task & Purpose, Reddit was key for veteran organizers to lead the charge in honoring Peter Wang's life.

Wang's service will be an open casket, and his family requested he would be buried in his JROTC uniform.

Three Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets killed in the Florida school massacre have been awarded medals by the US Army, according to a report.

In addition to receiving the Medal of Heroism, Wang was posthumously admitted to the U.S. Military Academy to fulfill his "lifetime goal" of attending West Point. An online petition had called for Wang to receive full military honors at his funeral.

Wang's friend Aiden Ortiz and another classmate started a petition on the White House website "We the People" to have the federal government bury Wang with full military honors.

Wang, 15, was last seen holding a door open so that others could escape the shooter, his cousin told the Miami Herald.

Army spokesman Michael Maddox said that Petty's family had been presented with the award at her funeral Monday, and Wang's family received the award during his funeral service Tuesday. "West Point has given posthumous offers of admissions in very rare instances for those candidates or potential candidate's whose actions exemplified the tenets of Duty, Honor and Country".

The families of the three slain students either have been or will be presented with medals at the funerals for their children.

Other students enrolled in the school's JROTC program exhibited courage during the tragedy, including Zackary Walls and Colton Haab, who protected their peers by shielding their classroom's windows with a kevlar curtain.

Awards for the other cadets are now going through the review process.

The medal is awarded to a JROTC Cadet who performs an act of heroism that sets the student apart from fellow Cadets.
