Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern on board for Big Little Lies season 2

Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz are confirmed to return for Season 2 of the dramedy Big Little Lies.

The trio join returning stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman in season two, which added Meryl Streep as a series regular to play Perry's (Alexander Skarsgard) mother, Mary Louise Wright.

The series, which is based on Liane Moriarty's book of the same name, was originally meant to be a single season effort.

Big Little Lies' second season is expected to premiere on HBO in the USA and Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom in 2019.

In addition to Kelly, Arnold, Witherspoon and Kidman, executive producers on the series also include Bruna Papandrea, Vallée, Nathan Ross and Gregg Fienberg.

"Big Little Lies" premiered on HBO in early 2017 and went on to win eight Primetime Emmy Awards. Co-stars Kravitz and Woodley also negotiated a raise.

Woodley returns as Jane Chapman, who tries to move on from her past to create a life for herself and son Ziggy in Monterey, California. And as Bonnie Carlson, Kravitz "struggles with Perry's death and is forced to face demons in her past".

Celeste Wright (Kidman): Reeling from her husband Perry's death, Celeste is adrift, but determined to fight for her family and find the woman she once was. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode ... the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom.

The long rumored second installment was officially greenlighted in December with a seven-episode order, matching the length of the first season. Written by David E. Kelley and directed by Andrea Arnold, season 2 of "Big Little Lies" reportedly will arrive in 2019.
