Cardinals send OF Randal Grichuk to Blue Jays for two right-handers

The Blue Jays have acquired OF Randal Grichuk from the Cardinals in exchange for RHP Dominic Leone and minor league RHP Conner Greene. The two corner outfield spots are likely to be determined in Spring Training as the likes of Grichuk, Steve Pearce, Teoscar Hernandez, Ezequiel Carrera, Anthony Alford, Dalton Pompey, and Dwight Smith Jr. compete for playing time in left and right field. Grichuk moved to the Cardinals in a 2013 trade in which the Angels acquired third baseman David Freese.

Grichuk, 26, appeared in 122 games for the Cardinals last season, hitting.238, with 22 home runs, 59 RBI and an OPS of.758. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound right-hander has pitched in 160 games (all in relief) for Seattle (2014-15), Arizona (2015-16) and Toronto (2017).

Grichuk became eligible for salary arbitration this season and signed a one-year, $2.6-million deal a week ago.

Leone, 26, logged 70.1 innings for the Jays in 2017, going 3-0 with a 2.56 ERA and 81 strikeouts. At double-A New Hampshire past year, he posted a 5.29 ERA in 132.2 innings with 83 walks and 92 strikeouts.

Greene, 22, was selected by the Blue Jays in the seventh round of the 2013 draft. He made Baseball Prospectus's top 100 prospects ranking before the 2016 season, right at No. 100.
