Two Men Flee From NYPD Officer In Times Square, Later Get Caught

Instead of stopping, the driver speeds up, hitting the officer and knocking him to the ground.

A Brooklyn driver named Shreaf (he declined to give his last name) was originally arrested early Wednesday after troopers tailed his vehicle and mistakenly identified him as the culprit of the hit-and-run.

The New York Daily News reports police caught 20-year-old Arfhy Santos and 24-year-old William Lopez Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 18) after they tried to jump out of a third-floor window in Harlem as the police were nearing arrest.

"It took a lot of courage on the part of the police officer to stand there and attempt to stop that auto", he said.

The officer is heard on video of the incident telling the driver to get out of the auto after it stopped in front of him, but the vehicle then clipped the officer and drove off towards 8th Ave.

"It took a lot of courage for that police officer to stand there", NYPD official said, and the officer's instincts took over. "This cop ran out to the street, yelling at the guy and what not".

Multiple officers, including the one who was clipped, chased after the sedan on foot but eventually lost track of it.

The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his legs and back, police said. "They don't surrender. They use the vehicle as a weapon", Aubry said. He was taken to Mt. Sinai St. Luke's hospital and was expected to make a full recovery. Santos is charged with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment, while Lopez is charged with reckless endangerment and reckless driving.
