George Clooney directing, starring in 'Catch-22' drama series

George Clooney's anticipated return to TV will be a streaming experience. Clooney will appear as Colonel Cathcart and will both co-direct and co-executive produce the series with his Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov.

Hulu will partner with George Clooney to produce a limited series based on the classic novel Catch-22, the network said during its Television Critics Association winter press tour.

This will be Clooney's first major foray back into television since leaving the NBC drama ER when that series ended in 2009.

Catch-22 is described in a news release as "the story of the incomparable, artful dodger, Yossarian, a U.S. Air Force bombardier in World War II who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him".

Clooney will play Colonel Cathcart in the story of Capt. John Yossarian, a U.S. Air Force bombardier who keeps being sent on risky missions to complete his service.

Negotiations to stream the series via the online platform Hulu are under way, a source close to the matter told AFP, confirming several USA media reports.

Davies brought up Heller's novel, which the trio agreed would benefit from a longer treatment than the two hours in Mike Nichols' 1970s feature. Richard Brown and Steve Golin will also serve as EPs for Anonymous Content. Luke Davis and David Michôd are set as co-writers and executive producers.

According to Deadline, Catch-22 is the third limited series ordered by Hulu, following the high-profile 11.22.63, produced by J.J. Abrams, and the upcoming 9/11-themed series The Looming Tower.
