Unified Korean ice hockey team proposed for Winter Olympics

News of apparent active nuclear test site comes just days after North Korean officials met with South Korean officials for the first time in more than two years.

The Korean Peninsula was divided after it was liberated from Japanese colonial rule in 1945.

Mr Trump and Kim have traded insults over the previous year, as North Korea has accelerated weapons tests and appears on the cusp of having a nuclear-tipped missile that could strike the U.S. mainland.

It comes during a state of heightened nuclear tension following heated rhetoric between the U.S. and North Korea as well as greater Russian military activity and a build-up of NATO forces in Eastern Europe.

Some analysts suspect South Korea's enthusiasm for diplomacy now is in part to avoid embarrassment or incidents during the Winter Olympics, which they fear might otherwise be disrupted by North Korean terrorism or cyber attacks.

Last week, North Korea accepted South Korea's offer for high-level talks, after South Korea and the United States chose to suspend their joint military exercises.

We don't know how hard Kim, through his surrogate Ri Son-Gwon, chief negotiator in Tuesday's get-together at Panmunjeom, is going to bargain in the run-up to the opening of the Games on February 9. The vice president is also scheduled to stop in Alaska to review intercontinental ballistic missile defense systems.

North Korea and South Korea held talks on Tuesday after a prolonged period of tension on the Korean peninsula over the North's missile and nuclear programmes. South Korea's President Moon Jae-in may be more open to renewed connection with the North than many of his predecessors, but South Korea remains heavily dependent on the presence of U.S. troops for its protection, and even more on United States arms sales. A lot of good energy. And then all of the sudden somebody's my best friend.

"I like it very much what I'm seeing".

Moon has been supportive of the pressure campaign but has long advocated engagement with Pyongyang.

Pairs figure skaters Ryom Tae-Ok and Kim Ju-Sik are the only North Korean athletes to have so far qualified for Pyeongchang 2018.

The North's successful participation in the games would represent a reduction in tensions following a year that witnessed repeat weapons testing by the DPRK in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

Yonhap cited Moon's chief press secretary, Yoon Young-chan, as saying Trump dismissed a recent report that he may be considering military action against the North. Trump has since encouraged the limited talks between the two Koreas, calling them a "big start" and saying it would be "great for humanity" if something beyond cooperation in the winter games resulted. The two sides fought the Korean War in 1950-53, with China and the Soviet Union supporting North Korea and US-led United Nations forces backing the South.

President Trump said he may be open to a diplomatic meeting with North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.

Some U.S. officials have suggested that North Korea was using diplomatic overtures to try to drive a wedge between Washington and ally Seoul and did not intend to engage seriously.
