Rio Ferdinand clarifies Alexis Sanchez comments amid talk of Manchester United switch

The Frenchman with a degree in economics believes players running their contracts down will become more prevalent.

When asked by reporters if Sanchez will stay at Arsenal if a replacement is not brought in, Wenger said: "You sum it up very well".

But having previously said he still wanted Sanchez to stay as well, the Arsenal boss seems to have given up all hope of keeping the Chile global.

The Arsenal manager confirmed that Sanchez's future will be "decided in the next 48 hours", after leaving him out of Arsenal's 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth this afternoon.

It was also reported that Sanchez's agent wants 5 million pounds for his part in the deal, taking the overall tally to 40 million - double what City are willing to pay. If Pep wants him again now, I'm sure he's thinking: 'I'm going to go there second time round and do it properly this time.

"They've got outstanding players, and we knew the only way to win today was by playing well".

Just when you thought the race for Alexis Sanchez's signature was a straight head-to-head between Manchester City and United, along come Liverpool and their £142 million of Philippe Coutinho money to throw a major spanner in the works. Arsenal boss Wenger said Sanchez would only be allowed to leave if they could get a new signing over the line - the club have been linked with young Bordeaux forward Malcom.

Wenger lamented two costly mistakes that extended the Gunners' winless run to five games in all competitions.

"I'm not the kind of blind manager, blind in the sense of this player is untouchable, this player we can never sell, I think every player has a price".

If Souness's advice is heeded, however, the saga may well be resolved very soon. It also seems odd considering, without him, Arsenal's team for the trip to Bournemouth is as uninspiring as ever.

"At the general level, what I can say is myself and the Manchester United board, and the owners, we don't believe a lot in the January market".

"In the big clubs you are in a choice".

"Of course I want a quick resolution", he told reporters at Arsenal's north London training base.
