Major League Soccer launches own esports league for Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 World Cup

Known as eMLS, the league will resemble esports organizations like the National Basketball Association 2K League in that its competitors will represent real-life sports teams.

The teams will use their own process to select a player. The eMLS league will only feature players from the USA and Canada, and a number of real MLS teams will be hosting their own eMLS clubs.

Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced a new partnership with EA Sports to create its own esports league, dubbed eMLS, which will be tied to the worldwide competition for Federation Internationale de Football Association 18. eMLS will feature 19 of MLS's 23 clubs, with each real-world team selecting a professional gamer to represent them in competition.

The FIFA esports circuit is also beginning to expand, with tournament organizers like Gfinity doubling down on the game as a competitive title. With only one esports athlete per eMLS club, rather than a roster of multiple players, it's unclear whether the league has a standard contingency plan in case a club's sole representative is unable to compete for some reason.

There are 19 MLS teams hosting an eMLS club.

There's no word on whether eMLS pros are being set up as full-time jobs, like spots in the National Basketball Association 2K League or Overwatch League. The victor of the tournament will get a spot in the Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 Global Series Playoffs, which will be followed by the Federation Internationale de Football Association eWorld Cup to be held in August. The owners of the squads in those esports organizations are often billionaires or corporations, and they provide their athletes with salaries, benefits and housing. It will also serve as the qualifier for the Canadian and United States representatives for the EA Sports FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs.

The official dates for the eMLS Cup will be announced soon by EA Sports and MLS.

EA Sports and Major League Soccer signed a deal recently and have launched the eMLS Cup, an e-sports tournament that will see representatives of 19 teams from MLS clash for a shot at the Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 World Championship.
