JUST IN: Matt Patricia "likely" to be named Lions coach per ESPN

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the news Sunday, noting New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia appears set to fill the role. McDaniels was also a finalist for the Giants' head-coaching job together with Patricia and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur.

It won't become official until after the Patriots' season ends, which will either be next weekend after the AFC Championship Game or two weeks after that, following Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis.

Bob Quinn, the Lions' general manager, previously worked in the Patriots' player personnel department.

New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is reportedly heading to Detroit to coach the Lions. [VIDEO]Art Stapleton of The Record said the Giants were hesitant to name Patricia as their favorite because Patricia might choose the Lions over them.

Patricia will be going from the NFL's most successful franchise to one of the league's least successful franchise. The Lions finished 9-7 in 2017, missing the playoffs.

With the Patriots remaining alive in the playoffs after a 35-14 win over the Titans on Saturday, the Patriots will host the victor of the Jaguars and Steelers game.

But the man now destined for one of those jobs is Patricia, one year after he interviewed for the head-coaching jobs with the Rams and Chargers. During his 4 seasons in Detroit, Caldwell went 36-28, and 0-2 in the postseason.

According to the team's website, Patricia has been the Patriots' defensive coordinator since 2012.
