Hyundai Shows Off New Fuel Cell Vehicle At CES

Hyundai introduced their next-generation fuel cell vehicle (FCV), Nexo, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week.

Also the vehicle can recognize pedestrians. But Nexo, the technology Trojan horse, well that perspective of the same vehicle packs in a slew of innovations sure to be found across amber fields and mountains majesty. It replaces the outgoing Tucson FCEV, which was the automaker's original hydrogen fuel cell vehicle.

"We call this the next future utility vehicles", said Hyundai vice president Ki-Sang Lee. "Hydrogen energy is key to moving toward a more sustainable society and Hyundai is proud to be leading the charge in bringing the technology to a wider audience".

Lane Following Assist is an new to Hyundai and introduced with the Nexo.

While extreme weather can be a stumbling block for fuel-cell-powered vehicles, the Nexo is capable of starting within 30 seconds after being exposed to temperatures of -29 degrees Celsius, and can cool itself when temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Nexo features a voice command system, artificial intelligence, and can be switched into an autonomous vehicle.

The powertrain is lighter and has improved packaging and there are now three improved hydrogen storage tanks.

What makes Nexo unique is that it sits on a dedicated platform touted to be more efficient and compact, as well as quieter in operation. It would be interesting to see the response of the competitors to this distinguished move by Hyundai. Fuel cells and their fast refilling times may also be more suited to self-driving cars, which will likely be racking up much higher miles than cars today since they'll be able to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days week.

The Nexo will be available in selected markets early this year - there's no word on pricing yet, or indeed if it will even come to the UK. Hyundai also added that the vehicle will play an important part in their 18 eco-friendly vehicles by 2025 plan. Primarily, the low number of hydrogen stations would create hassles during fueling the vehicle.
