'The Handmaid's Tale' Season 2 Images Show a Bloodied, But Determined, Offred

One image is specifically of Offred (Elisabeth Moss), covered in blood and clearly either in the midst of, or following, a crisis situation. She's also drenched in blood on one side, but she doesn't seem to have a wound that could have led to that much blood loss.

In the new stills, the handmaids can be seen shrouded in a new uniform.

"These scenes that are so attractive, while set in such a awful place, provide the kind of contrast that makes me happy", showrunner Bruce Miller tells EW of the stills.

"What I can tell you, and I'm not joking one bit, is it's knocking me out where this story is going".

Season 1 adapted Margaret Atwood's acclaimed 1985 novel, ending with Elisabeth Moss' Offred - whom we now know by her real name, June - pregnant and being taken away in a Gilead-controlled van, heading either to dire punishment for an act of rebellion or to freedom. "Gilead is within you" is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd). Are you looking forward to the new season? "In season two, Offred and all our characters will fight against - or succumb to - this dark truth". Sometimes while writing the scripts, I just really wanted to surprise her, ' he said. "Plus you see the worlds that you weren't exposed to before: the Colonies, what that whole world is; those who make it to Canada, what happens there; the pregnancy, how that is coming along".

Season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale is set to premiere on Hulu sometime in April.

Given that the first season was based on Margaret Atwood's classic dystopian novel, the second season of the series - which is created by Bruce Miller and produced by MGM Television - will tread brand new ground.
