Power Goes Out at CES

Batteries and motors are getting smaller and more powerful, making electric scooters and even single-wheeled devices good for all day use over many miles. There are 3,900 exhibitors at the show, many of them with booths in the Convention Center.

"Today at approximately 11:15 a.m. PT, the Central Hall and South Hall bridge meeting rooms at the Las Vegas Convention Center lost power", CTA said in a joint statement with the Las Vegas Visitor and Convention Authority and NV Energy. While power within the South Hall was restored minutes later, it took two hours to fully restore power in the Central Hall, with conference organisers confirming on Twitter at 1.09pm that power was slowly being rolled out in the Central Hall.

Many companies were forced to suspend their presentations and barred from conducting demos at the annual tech fair. Security personnel evacuated attendees from the affected areas at the time.

In a statement, CES organiser, the Consumer Technology Association, blamed the outage on recent heavy rainfall which caused condensation on the venue's roof to short circuit one of the facility's transformers. Nevada Energy is "in the process of testing and restoring power". And the more socially conscious pointed out the hypocrisy of being bent out of shape over a brief blackout at CES when an entire territory of the United States has been without power for months... "The blackout is utterly nonsensical".

Officials said rainfall from a storm that hit the Valley on Tuesday, may have caused the outage. Huawei Mobile also promoted its Mate 10 Pro smartphone, saying, "Caught in the #CESBlackout?".
