Now, the North Korean leader is of course interested in cooling the situation down, he went on. Kim has dismissed Trump as a "dotard" and "frightened dog" in public statements.

Moon's praise for Trump is being seen as an attempt to ease United States concerns that the recent thaw in cross-border ties could drive a wedge between Seoul and Washington. On November 29, the North Korean leader said that his country had achieved full nuclear statehood after what he said was the successful test of a new missile capable of striking anywhere in the United States. The DPRK agreed to send its athletes and cheering squads to the 2018 Winter Olympics scheduled to kick off on February 9 at South Korea's eastern county of PyeongChang. "Fools, but talks are a good thing!"

"You'll see that a lot with me", he said.

White House and National Security Council officials declined to comment on whether Trump and Kim have talked.

Kim has vowed never to give up his country's nuclear weapons, regarding them as his last line of defence against a U.S. invasion.

Speaking in Washington on Wednesday, Trump told a Cabinet meeting that his administration's pressure campaign has propelled North Korea to seek talks with South Korea.
