Hospitals from South Bend to Evansville have imposed restrictions that include barring visitors other than immediate family or other significant persons.

The latest CDC figures show that 36 states have reported widespread flu activity, up from 23 during the week of December 16.

Since Oct. 1, the CDC is reporting more than 13,000 cases of the flu-that's six times the number as the same time previous year.

On a positive note, there were no new influenza outbreaks reported this week at long-term care facilities.

People who think they might have the flu should contact their doctor right away to see if they need treatment with a prescription antiviral drug such as Tamiflu, according to advice at the NC DHHS website.

The flu season shows no sign of slowing down with 478 confirmed cases in Central Alberta and 49 people ending up in hospital.

Fuller said one reason for the spike in cases compared to last year is this year's vaccine.

Request the "quadrivalent vaccine, " the one that protects against four influenza strains, because one of the strains in circulation in Alabama (Type B/Yamagata) is only included in the quadrivalent vaccine.

Children and people with a weakened immune system are particularly at risk for much tougher cases of the flu. The patients may have come to the emergency room for flu or other reasons and been tested; the numbers don't represent patients admitted to the hospital.
