Michigan State routs Maryland for 15th win of the season

Even teams that outplay Michigan State in the early stages run the very likely risk of losing steam later on.

IU comes into the game at 7-9 on the season and 0-3 in conference play after a two-game road trip that saw losses to both Ohio State and Penn State.

The Spartans looked every bit of a national title contender.

Tillman and Goins sightings: Freshman forward Xavier Tillman and redshirt-junior forward Kenny Goins both contributed mightily in the Spartans' win over Maryland, and helped spark a 15-3 run early in the game to close the first half.

Willie Taggart has been in contact with Michigan State assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett to be the Florida State defensive coordinator, according to a report from Dan Wolken of USA Today. And after sophomore Kevin Huerter hit his third three-pointer to give his team a one-point lead just seven minutes before halftime, the unthinkable at least seemed faintly possible.

Ward finished with a team-high 16 points in the Maryland victory, and said he won't reveal what his go-to move is. The momentum shifted in favor of the Spartans after Nick Ward recovered a loose ball near Michigan State's bench.

Freshman Jaren Jackson had 15 points, three blocks and two steals for the Spartans despite playing just 4 minutes in the first half because he had two fouls. Maryland had no answer at the power forward spot for the skilled 6-foot-11 Jackson; sophomore Justin Jackson would've guarded him if healthy.

Meanwhile, Michigan State owns records of 13-1 SU and 10-5 ATS.

The Spartans weren't able to get any closer as Marody's third tally of the day with 3:47 to go put the game away for MI.

The Terps, battered by frontcourt injuries and exhausted from a two-day turnaround, played as well as they could have hoped through the first 15 minutes of a conference road game Thursday night. He showed off the same kind of range he had when the Terps faced Syracuse Nov. 27.

The Spartan defense was just as good as the offense, as they were able to shut down the Terrapins most of the night. Cowan had some success doing so, like on this jumper over Joshua Langford and on this drive-and-dish to senior Jared Nickens. But Ohio State doesn't have as much talent up and down the roster as Michigan State. Jay LaPrete, AP Michigan's Moe Wagner (13) dunks in front of Ohio State's C.J. Jackson in the first half Monday, Dec. 4, 2017 at Value Center Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Rebounding is also a strength but the Terrapins average 40 per game as well, but injuries could cause that to waver. She finished with a career-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds in her most productive outings of the year.

Maryland played the number one team in the country about as tough as they could have missing two frontcourt players. MI is playing well, Purdue is playing well and Ohio State is playing really well. Morsell got the starting nod from Turgeon and drew the assignment of guarding Bridges, while Tomaic played 14 minutes with Cekovsky and Fernando in foul trouble. He took a shot from the right circle and banked it off of the back of Spartan defenseman Zach Osburn and into the net.

The Terps must regroup quickly. Maryland arrived here at least believing it could hang with Michigan State if it slowed the pace of the game. The Hoosiers for its first Big Ten win of the season at home against Purdue.
