La Liga Recap: Villarreal upset Real Madrid at the Bernabeu

Pablo Fornals scored an 87th-minute victor as Villarreal recorded a 1-0 victory over Spanish champions Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Saturday afternoon.

The La Liga match between Real Madrid and Villarreal will be broadcast live on beIN Sports.

Real will once again be without the services of Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema for this afternoon's encounter.

Both teams had their moments in what was a tight opening 10 minutes, with Nacho seeing a goal-bound strike blocked for Real Madrid, while Samu Castillejo was threatening down the other end of the field.

Madrid had a penalty appeal waved away in the first half when visiting defender Alvaro Gonzalez appeared to block a shot from Gareth Bale with his arm.

Ronaldo almost scored from close range just before halftime, but his shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo in a play in which the forward claimed to be pushed before he hit the ball.

The visitors did go close five minutes into the second half as Denis Cheryshev created some space for himself before firing just wide of the upright.

Real were finding it tough to break down the Villarreal defence and introduced Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez for the final 20 minutes.

He made an even better stop to palm Ronaldo's 25-yard dipping free-kick over the top via the crossbar, before the Portugal captain wastefully dinked over Asenjo and wide of the left post after latching onto Luka Modric's throughball.

It turned out to be quite a comfortable conclusion for Villarreal as Real Madrid's stuttering league form, which has effectively ended their chances of catching Barcelona, continued in front of their own supporters.

Villarreal are sixth in La Liga, four points behind Real Madrid.
