Key thing was to keep Virat Kohli quiet

That move raised a lot of eyebrows even though captain Virat Kohli justified the decision by saying that Rohit was selected on current form.

By then‚ word had leaked that Rahane would be left out and the theory goes that Kohli was in no mood to discuss the rights and wrongs of his fate with the Indian press‚ who tend to obsess over such matters.

John Benaud played three Test matches for Australia, scoring 223 runs and taking three wickets.

"These things can always be looked at in hindsight - thinking what if or what if not".

"I feel that definitely the batting order through mistakes we committed in the first game and through the experience we gained in the first game, we are certainly in a much better shape to come at their bowling attack in this game", he added.

India needed solidarity and application from the batsmen early on Day 2 and that is exactly what Rohit did by weathering the early storm along with Pujara. "History of Rohit Sharma and history of Shikhar Dhawan in overseas conditions are not very good".

However, just when Rohit was looking comfortable at the crease, an incoming delivery from Kagiso Rabada hit his pads plumb in front of the stumps and he was on his way back to the pavillion.

Indian batsmen struggled against Proteas' pace bowling as they surrendered in both innings. The Cape Town Test, one that India lost to by 72 runs in nearly four days, with one of those days getting robbed by rain, led to one such build-up. With 209 runs, he was third highest run-getter in the series behind Kohli (272 runs) and Cheteshwar Pujara (280). He narrowly missed out on his maiden ton on that tour getting out for 96 in the Durban Test. It's not just about form, it's also about where people score runs. He's probably been our most consistent and solid player away from home.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly though, is of the opinion Rohit should be given another chance while Rahane could also get a look in. "I have tremendous regard for Virat Kohli and we will see an improved performance in the next game".

"You have to bring Rahane and Rahul back in the playing XI for the next Test".

Centurion/Mumbai: Regular Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and opener KL Rahul had extended nets at Centurion two days before the all-important second Test against South Africa.

Given the fragility of their batting in Cape Town‚ India would do well to retain Sharma as well as recall Rahane.

Now with Dhawan failing miserably, KL Rahul comes in contention for the opening slot in the second game. Rahul because he has done well in overseas conditions.

"You have to be open to those suggestions, but I'll have to give this one to "Faffie" (du Plessis)", he said.

All that is bold is clearly not lovely as Rohit's struggles in both innings in Cape Town proved. I knew that the new ball was going to be the key for us and that if we could get wickets with the new ball we felt we can get through their batting line-up.
