Kashmiri militants killed in encounters are 'martyrs': PDP MLA Aijaz Ahmad Mir

Ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Aijaz Ahmed courted controversy on Thursday by calling "Kashmiri militants" "martyrs" and "brothers", batting for talks with separatists, and cautioning against glorifying killing of terrorists.

"We feel sad when our security forces are martyred as well".

The statement from the PDP MLA comes in a day after Aijaz Ahmad Mir had asked the Jammu and Kashmir legislators to not be happy over the deaths of Kashmiri militants as they are also "brothers".

"Celebrating the death of militants, who were children of Kashmir, can not be justified".

"This house has to end the blame game over the killings", he said, and stressed that the Centre's special representative, Dineshwar Sharma should take the militants on board during dialogues. "It is our collective failure", he said, adding that they are children, who have gone down the wrong track, and should be counselled and brought back. "We should sympathize with parents of security jawans and with parents of terrorists as well", he said. It is glorifying terrorism, you are playing with fire... "He should talk to separatists and militants in Kashmir too", he said.

Members of National Conference (NC), Congress and CPI (M) expressed anger over the death of a 20-year-old man allegedly in firing by security forces following the killing of a militant in Khudwani area of Kulgam district on Tuesday.

Mir's remark triggered an uproar in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly with Opposition leaders, including former CM Omar Abdullah, demanding the PDP-BJP Government's response. In a stinging response, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "Terrorists and separatists are enemies of Kashmir, Kashmiris, development and peace".

Speaking to NDTV, state BJP MLA Ravinder Raina said, "I condemn this ridiculous statement". "Terrorists who are from Kashmir are martyrs, they are our brothers", said Pir.

"There can be ideological clashes between them and us".
