Helfrich to be named Chicago Bears offensive coordinator

The Bears are looking to get the most out of quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and emerge from one of the worst runs in franchise history.

The former Oregon Ducks head coach and Southern Oregon University quarterback has reportedly agreed to become the new offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.

In his introductory press conference, Nagy said he and Fangio had spoken about retaining him. Fangio was believed to have been a candidate for the Green Bay Packers' defensive coordinator position, but the Packers hired former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine on Wednesday; a day after the Los Angeles Chargers announced they had reached an agreement to retain their defensive coordinator, Gus Bradley. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, left, and co-offensive coordinator Matt Nagy talk during the first half of an NFL preseason football game against the Seattle Seahawks in Kansas City, Mo., Aug. 13, 2016. By no means did that close off all options for Fangio. His 2017 defense finished in the Top 10 in both points and yards allowed, even with injuries at a number of key positions.

Fangio became a free agent Tuesday after declining a contract extension last offseason.

According to the settlement, both parties acknowledged that the lump sum was less than the maximum that UO would have owed had it paid Helfrich through the end of his contract in 2020 but was calculated "with the expectation that coach's earnings from comparable employment. through January 31, 2020, will not exceed $1,700,000".

Hiring a veteran defensive coordinator was paramount for Nagy, a first-time head coach who will be directing the offense.
