ED raids Karti Chidambaram's property

The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday searched properties linked to Karti Chidambaram, son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, in connection with its money laundering probe into the Aircel-Maxis deal case. "I anticipated they'll search premises in Chennai again but in a comedy of errors they came to Jor Bagh (in Delhi) and officers told me that they thought Karti is an occupant of this house but he is not". "(ED officials) searched and found nothing but since they had to justify themselves they took papers of a statement made by the government in Parliament, few years back. Nothing was recovered from Karti's house during the raid.

Official sources told PTI that the raids are being conducted in Delhi and Chennai since early morning. the report also mentioned that the Enforcement Directorate officials in Chennai and their counterparts from Delhi are involved in the operation.

He also said this was not an enquiry but just a raid, and kept emphasising that nothing was found or seized.

Calling the raid a vendetta against senior Congress leaders, Congress party member Randeep Surjewala said, "Everyday PM Modi and his government use ED and CBI as captive puppets to seek revenge from opposition". The CBI FIR also names INX Media directors, Peter and Indrani Mukerjea - both accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.

"It was a raid conducted under the provisions of PMLA", said Arun Natrajan. No FIR has been filed so far over the crime that they claim we did and they do not have proof over anything. The case investigating being investigated by the CBI as well.

Following the FIPB clearance, INX Media said it had received Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of Rs 46.20 million, but actually received Rs 3,053.60 million between August 2007 and May 2008, the ED said. The investigating agency says the FIPB acted beyond its mandate since the investment involved was more than its limit.

The Airtel-Maxis case was part of the wider 2G scam that engulfed the UPA regime.
