Driver recalls terrifying moment mudflow sweeps away his vehicle after evacuating home

Desionne Franklin says he was afraid it was all over as the Prius careened down Country Club Drive in the Burbank foothills Tuesday.

"By that time my whole life was flashing before me, 'Oh, this is not about to happen right here, '" he said.

Franklin posted his own video on Instagram of the aftermath, saying he and his girlfriend had "barely made it out".

"I could hear a rumbling and the rain was coming down hard and I said 'we gotta go now, '" Franklin said.

Franklin told the TV station that he and his girlfriend soon then packed into the Prius. He was in the auto at it was hydroplaning, with no steering and no brakes.

Then a wave of water crashed into the back of the vehicle.

"My girlfriend was screaming at the top of her lungs: 'Go, go, go! We've got to get out of here!'" Franklin said. "Then the hydroplaning started".

"I was completely at the mercy of the flow of the water."

They were driving slowly down the steep, curving road through waves of rock-laden, muddy water, when a wave of water crashed into the back of the vehicle. The auto speeds downhill and is only stopped from flying out of control by the curved roadway.

"Oh, this might be how it ends", he thought.

At least one other resident of Country Club Road had her vehicle carried away too but luckily she wasn't inside it. Wendy Peters' auto was parked near her home when it was picked up and carried off.

'One of the cars looked like a wadded up piece of foil paper, ' he said. He praised the auto for how it handled the mud and helped him and his girlfriend survive without serious injury.

Remarkably, nobody was hurt in the flooding.

"I love the auto now", Franklin said.

The Prius, which Franklin recently had leased to make extra money through ride-sharing, came away with only a few scratches. "It got us through hell and high water, literally".
