The other Indian left in the rally, Hero MotoSports' CS Santosh, climbed up five places to be placed 51st after the fifth stage.

Top South African rider David Thomas brought his Husqvarna home a fine 47th, moving up nine places to 48th overall, while Donovan van de Langeberg (KTM) made up two places after posting 58th on Stage 5, to sit 65th overall.

With the canyons showing up in stage 4, stage 5 will see the racers move towards Arequipa from San Juan de Marcona in Peru. After this sprint along the beach, the competitors were challenged to tackle one of the longest sandy section ever in the history of the Dakar, a total of 100 kms with dunes of all sizes making up a total stage run of 444km including the special stage of 330 kms.

Even Hero MotoSports suffered an injury let down when their senior-most rider Joaquim Rodrigues withdrew with a back problem after stage 1.

- Sam Sunderland's Dakar Rally title defense ended on Tuesday after the British motorcycle rider crashed in Peru's Ica desert while leading the race and had to be flown out by helicopter. The 28-year-old defending champion landed hard after a jump and it eventually led to his exit. He had to be taken to the hospital too.

Yamalube Yamaha's Adrien Van Beveren, now the leader in motorcycle category, held on to his slender lead by finishing fifth in stage 5. Van Beveren finished five minutes ahead of teammate Xavier de Soultrait, with Austria's Matthias Walkner seven minutes off the pace on his KTM. We lost pressure in one of the tyres.

The 13-time Dakar champion notched up his first stage win of the 2018 event, beating his nearest rival - Toyota's Bernhard ten Brinke - by nearly five minutes. Sainz, also in a Peugeot and a double world rally champion, got bogged down in the dunes early on and was 18 minutes behind Peterhansel at the finish. He finished the stage at 33 position, which now places him at 24 positions in the overall rankings. The temperature will drop sharply with there is also possibility of heavy rain.
