ATP Auckland: Bautista Agut edges del Potro for his 7th ATP title

Roberto Bautista Agut claimed his second Auckland Open title with an entertaining win over Juan Martin del Potro in the final on Saturday.

Both players will now turn their attention to next week's Australian Open in Melbourne, where Bautista Agut will play compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the first round.

He romped through the first set in 31 minutes as he broke Del Potro three times and produced numerous forehand winners.

Bautista Agut broke Haase in the seventh game of the second set but Haase immediately broke back and the set again went to a tiebreak.

"Today I felt really good on the court, and I played very good tennis throughout the match". Every weapon in their armoury was on display, with Haase even switching his racquet from the right toleft hand to reach shots swinging away down the backhand side.Del Potro and Ferrer's rallies were generally shorter as they slugged it out from the base line.

"I started the match very well". In two matches in Auckland, 2009 champion del Potro has yet to concede a break point.

But, the Argentine second seed recovered to take out the second set and repeatedly come close in the third, only to be broken late to lose the decider 7-5. "I did too. It's never easy against David because he is such a fighter and runs a lot, I just took my chances". I think the crowd enjoyed the game. Juan Martin netted a backhand to get broken in game number 2 but he fired up his mighty forehand to get back on the track in the following game, breaking back with a volley victor and reducing the deficit to 2-1. "The end was unbelievable when I saw the ball in I went insane, I was so happy. But then my game improved a little bit and I made mistakes in the last game", del Potro said.
