Angelique Kerber continues her hot streak, wins title in Sydney

The German player defeated Ashleigh Barty in straight sets, 6-4 6-4, after an hour and 11 minutes in the Sydney final to win her 11th career title, the first one since 2016 US Open.

Kerber, who began past year as No 1 before finishing at No 22, continued her 2018 resurgence with a thumping 6-3, 6-1 win over Slovakia Dominika Cibulkova.

Kerber will play Camila Giorgi in the semifinals.

Kerber, who began previous year at the top of the rankings before finishing at No. 22, won her seventh straight match of 2018, including four singles at the Hopman Cup last week.

"This start is not bad for 2018, for sure".

During the trophy presentation, Kerber said: "I am playing wonderful tennis again and feeling just great". The 2016 Australian Open champion and former No. 1-ranked Kerber won four singles matches at the Hopman Cup, helping Germany reach the final against Switzerland, and followed up with five wins in Sydney.

Barty played a poor semi-final despite winning the match and has to improve considerably to stand a chance tonight.

Barty, ranked nineteenth, cruised past Barbora Strycova 6-3, 6-2, while 25th-ranked Gavrilova had direct passage to the last four when Spain's Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza withdrew after her win over Kiki Bertens with a thigh injury. "I am really looking forward to the rest of the year", Kerber said in a court-side interview after claiming a first title since her U.S. Open triumph.

De Minaur, who beat Frenchman Benoit Paire 4-6 6-1 6-1 last night, takes on Russia's Daniil Medvedev who upset Fabio Fognini 2-6 6-4 6-1.
