USA in 15 hours: KQ's maiden NY flight to cost Sh89,000

Kenya Airways (KQ) has released the tickets for its inaugural flight to the U.S. on 28 October.

An economy ticket to fly to NY direct aboard Kenya Airways starting October 28 will set you back Sh89,000.

In September 2017, the airline was granted approval to operate flights in the United States by the department of transportation while JKIA in the same year was granted category one by the US Federal Aviation Administration after the airport upgraded its security features.

The flight is also expected to increase tourism in Kenya, with the U.S. being its largest source market for tourists.

Kenya Airways will operate two Boeing 787 Dreamliners on the route with daily flights.

On Thursday, the national carrier began selling tickets for the inaugural flight, which is scheduled for October 28. "We are honoured to contribute to the economic growth of Kenya and East Africa". The flight will fly overnight in the westbound direction- unusual for transatlantic flights-departing Nairobi at 11:25 p.m. before arriving at JFK at 6:25 a.m. the following day.

The 14-hour flight will depart from Nairobi's JKIA AT 23:25hrs, and from New York's JFK at 1225 hrs. "This is a reduction from the current flight time of over 22 hours, including lengthy layovers", said Mikosz.

The Kenya Tourism Board has lauded Kenya Airways for the move, saying it was a big win for the sector in the country. USA is now Kenya's top tourism source market, commanding a market share of 12.2 percent of total arrivals to Kenya as at October 2017.

This convenient schedule will allow connections to and from over 40 African destinations through Kenya Airways hub in Nairobi.

The airline already serves Africa, Europe, Middle-East, Indian sub-continent and Asia. He says the new route will return the airline into profitability. Mikosz revealed the carrier will continue to modernise its fleet though its 32 aircraft are some of the youngest in Africa.
