Statewide, troopers investigated 1,169 crashes over the long weekend, nearly double the number investigated during the same period a year ago, when troopers responded to 595 accidents.

Two were arrested for charges related to driving under the influence over the weekend during the New Year's Maximum Enforcement Period, the California Highway Patrol reported Wednesday.

From Dec. 30, 2017 to January 1 of this year, a total of 284 people were arrested for DUI, State Police say.

CHP removed four DUI drivers from Humboldt County roads during the new year's maximum enforcement period.

During this year's New Year's Day MEP, the CHP made at least 936 arrests, an increase of 22 percent compared arrests made a year ago.
