Mamata Banerjee receives D Litt from Calcutta varsity

Among other grounds for opposition, the PIL says Banerjee had once declared to have completed Ph.D degree, but in March 1985, it was found that the University of East Georgia from which she claimed to have secured the degree did not even exist.

Mamata Banerjee is the first Chief Minister of West Bengal to be honoured with D.Litt degree by Calcutta University during governance. The journalists were handpicked by their organisations to attend the tour with Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. History should not be distorted. "India has a diversity of origin and we should respect that". The government's argument that former chief ministers Jyoti Basu and Dr BC Roy, too, had received similar degrees from the university was incorrect, Mukhopadhyay said, as they had received their honorary degrees after stepping down from their position.

In their petition, the petitioners have argued that Calcutta University is a state-funded institution and will suffer a "credibility loss" if it confers the degree upon the highest executive authority of the state. He claimed the Calcutta University's decision is "arbitrary and devoid of any proper reasoning". The university is scheduled to confer the degree on Mamata on 11 January. The chief minister has also consented to receive the honour during the varsity's annual convocation.

The West Bengal government told the HC that a PIL challenging Calcutta University's decision to confer honorary D.Litt to CM Mamata was politically motivated. Advocate General Kishore Dutta said the plea was "out and out in political interest", and that "except character assassination, nothing is there", reported PTI.
