Backcourt boosts OR past No. 11 Arizona State

Tres Tinkle scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but Oregon State couldn't hold its lead at 17th-ranked Arizona on Thursday. The Ducks outscored the Sun Devils 38-16 in the paint.

Isaiah Pineiro made a 3-pointer and a jumper in succession for the Toreros last lead, 39-38.

The Ducks' quickness, length and bounce shined through with how they stuck around in a game they only led for less than 90 seconds of the first half.

Sophomore guard Payton Pritchard has been Oregon's leading scorer almost all season, but in Pac-12 play he'd struggled before Thursday with 9.3 points per game on 32.1-percent shooting. The under is 5-1 in the Wildcats' last six home games and the over is 5-1 in their last six versus the Pac-12. Sophomore Mikayla Pivec has handled much of the point guard duties, and she hadn't played the position since the seventh grade. Pritchard put the game on ice with two free throws in the closing moments that put the game out of reach for the Sun Devils. He was 6-of-12 with four 3-pointers for 21 points. Elijah Brown had 18 points and hit two free throws with 32 seconds left for Oregon.

Guard Kodi Justice scored 21 points and Shannon Evans II added 19 for the Sun Devils (13-3, 1-3).

It's a matchup of opposites, with the Wildcats featuring a dizzying offensive attack spearheaded by a three-headed monster of Deandre Ayton, Allonzo Trier and Rawle Alkins-who score 20.4, 19.6 and 15.6 points per game, respectively.

The great equalizer, as always, is on the defensive end-with the Beavers ranking first in the Pac 12 in points allowed (68.6). OR only made eight of its 31 attempts, but those eight and 14 offensive rebounds were the decisive aspects of their win.

"They grinded us up on defense", he said.

OR has not seen the Top 25 Rankings this season and according to Ken Pomeroy enter this week as the 65 best team.

The Sun Devils had 13 total rebounds at the half and OR had 10 alone on the offensive glass, good for a total of 20.

Oregon State went toe-to-toe with No. 17 Arizona before a late run propelled the Wildcats to a 62-53 win on Thursday night at the McKale Center.

"It was a physical game. They do a really good job".
