Sunderland confirm deal for highly-rated Chelsea defender

Sunderland manager Chris Coleman has said that the club's inconsistency in achieving results has been the main frustration in his time at the Stadium of Light. Furthermore, the Black Cats are also expected to make a loan approach for Liverpool's Ben Woodburn who has found his first-team opportunities hard to come by.

"There's a lack of belief and key areas where we must improve with a little bit of help from outside".

Both Coleman and his assistant Kit Symons are central defenders by trade and see Clarke-Salter in a role on the left of a back-three which is the position where Chelsea boss Antonio Conte expects him to progress at Premier League level.

The 20-year-old has been at Stamford Bridge since the age of eight and has won multiple UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup medals.

The 20-year old has not yet established himself within the Chelsea first team after having spent last season on loan with Bristol Rovers for whom he made 13 appearances and scored one goal.

Sunderland confirmed the signing earlier today on their official Twitter account.

He was involved in the Chelsea squad as recently as last weekend, taking his place on the bench as Chelsea drew with Norwich City, before finalising his loan move to Wearside.
