Bill on triple talaq heads to Lok Sabha today

Though a bill on triple talaq has been listed for introduction in the Lok Sabha today, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the bill would come up for introduction next week. The law was passed by the Union cabinet last week following a Supreme Court order pronouncing it invalid. Accusing the government of trying to interfere in the Muslim personal law, Mr. Ali said that the entire Muslim community would oppose the move without a second thought.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill is specifically made for the women who have to face humiliation and discrimination when their spouse divorce them abruptly over phone or even whatsapp messages.

Meanwhile, as per a report, the BJP issued a whip to all its MPs on Thursday to attend the Parliament session while the government tables the "controversial" bill in the House.

But it continued and there have been 177 reported casesof instant talaq before the judgement and 66 after the orderthis year.

It also makes a provision for alimony for the woman on whom instant triple talaq has been pronounced and grants her the custody of her children.

The apex court by a majority of 3:2 had ruled that the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims is "void", "illegal" and "unconstitutional".

AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi too described the proposed Bill as "draconian". The government on Wednesday informed Lok Sabha that Muslim organisations were not consulted to frame a draft bill to criminalise the practice of instant triple talaq. The law makes instantaneous pronouncement of talaq or talaq-e-biddat a cognisable, non-bailable offence.

In a remarkable decision on August 22 taken by a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court observed current triple talaq as against the law.
