Detroit named top 4 finalist for MLS expansion team

Detroit, meanwhile, has a team in the National Premier Soccer League.

Major League Soccer announced that Nashville, Cincinnati, Detroit and Sacramento are finalists vying for two expansion soccer clubs.

Detroit, Cincinnati, Nashville and Sacramento will make formal presentations on December 6 before the MLS Expansion Committee and Commissioner Don Garber in NY. Sports franchises have a unique ability to unite and inspire people.

Gilbert and Gores had pitched a plan to build a new soccer-specific stadium near the Wayne County jail site on Gratiot, but switched to Ford Field as the preferred option after lengthy negotiations to acquire the land fell through. Two cities will be awarded teams.

"While only Cincinnati, Detroit, Nashville and Sacramento are being considered for the next two expansion teams, all remaining markets are under consideration for the following two expansion clubs that will be announced at a later date", the MLS said in a statement. "From soccer fans to elected leaders, Nashville has demonstrated an unprecedented level of enthusiasm for bringing MLS to the city", lead investor John R. Ingram said in a statement. "We have been greatly encouraged by the progress that all four of these groups have made and we are looking forward to their presentations". The next two MLS expansion teams are scheduled to be announced before the end of the year.

The four ownership groups named above were among 12 markets that submitted formal bids in January for a total of four expansion slots as part of the league's expansion to 28 teams.

The MLS now has 22 teams, with Los Angeles being added in 2018 and a potential new franchise in Miami.

Major League Soccer just gave a major boost to Sacramento's hopes to get an expansion team.
