Syrian army takes full control of Deir Ezzor city from IS

The city is the provincial capital of surrounding Deir Ezzor province, an oil-rich region that sits on the county's eastern border with Iraq.

The areas on the eastern bank of Euphrates River are largely controlled by the US -backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who are advancing in that area against IS.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said children were among those killed in the blast that took place Saturday evening on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir al-Zour.

Gaining control of Deir Ezzor was a significant victory for the Syrian government, and followed ISIS' ousting from Raqqa, the de facto capital of the caliphate.

The jihadist group has lost much of the territory it once held in the province. It also comes as Iraqi forces and allied Shiite militiamen are chasing IS remnants inside the town of Qaim, on the Iraqi side of the border.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abdi congratulated Iraqi forces on retaking Qaim just over a week after the operation began.

Deir al-Zour is witnessing two military operations against ISIS.

According to the Syrian Army and Syrian state television, Deir ez-Zor has been completely liberated. The talks, sponsored jointly with Iran and Turkey, have brokered local deals that have significantly reduced violence in the war-torn country.

"Iraqi Security Forces have fought hard to reach this point, and their battle-proven troops captured ISIS's last Iraqi stronghold swiftly and thoroughly", said Maj.
