Ward in a rematch knocked out Kovalev

Undefeated pound-for-pound boxing titan Andre Ward has refused to rule out a possible blockbuster showdown with heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.

Kovalev was aggrieved at losing the pair's first meeting last November having knocked Ward down in round two, and again he was frustrated at the stoppage. With Kovalev clearly hurt, Ward poured on the punishment with a heavy barrage of punches to the body as referee Tony Weeks kept a close eye on the action.

Ward had received a hotly disputed points victory in their first fight and there will be fresh debate after he retained his WBA "super", IBF and WBO belts. It's boxing. I could have continued fighting, but I don't understand what happened. In round 7 Kovalev was showing small tell tale signs of fatigue by fighting with an open mouth.

Promoter Kathy Duva, angrily facing a "press conference" that was populated with Ward fans, said it was "inconceivable" that Kovalev could lose on "all those low blows in a row", and promised to appeal the decision to the Nevada state athletic commission.

"Maybe cruiserweight, I don't know". With a $6.5 million payday in his bank account, Ward will look toward other challenges.

Andre Ward has an Olympic gold medal, and the Oakland, Calif., fighter showed the type of world-class professional mettle Saturday night that he believes should entrench his status as the world's top pound-for-pound fighter.

This time, the fight was close throughout the first six rounds, with Kovalev generally showing more aggression and ring control, while Ward used his movement and boxing skills to counterpunch effectively. Kovalev started quickly, had Ward over in the second round and looked to have the measure of the night. Kovalev said he was gassed because he over-trained.

Kovalev has voiced his displeasure about Ward in April and in recent days.

With victory in hand, Ward turned his focus to boosting his case that he, not unbeaten three-belt middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin, is the No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer. It was a crashing right hand to the head that badly hurt Kovalev and started the assault the that finished the fight. I'd like to see him fight Anthony Joshua.

Billed as Ward vs. Kovalev 2: No Excuses! this second fight will be every bit as historic as the heavyweight division's Joe Louis vs Max Schmelling 2 rematch of June 22, 1938! .

Ward not letting Kovalev get the big shots off. Kovalev connects to the face. Instead of complaining, sit back, relax and enjoy the fight, isn't that the reason you love the sport?

Kovalev said he hoped to have a third fight, but that is quite improbable, given the awful rancor between Roc Nation Sports and Kovalev promoter Main Events, not to mention that the first fight was not a commercial success and the rematch was not likely to be one either. "Krusher" covered up and slumped over, but two more punches came from Ward and they both were on the border. I give him credit. "Kovalev fought a good fight but once I compute a fighter in my brain and have him in there, I know what I need to do the next time around".
