Portugal and Mexico draw 2-2 in Confederations Cup

Mexico claimed a 2-2 draw with Portugal in their Confederations Cup opener on Sunday with a last-gasp equaliser by Hector Moreno.

Although Mexico still has games left against Russian Federation and New Zealand, the path to a spot in the knockout round has now become much easier after earning Sunday's result.

New Zealand are at the bottom of the group with no points.

Portugal had the ball in the net early on after a Cristiano Ronaldo volley crashed off the crossbar and eventually reach Pepe to score.

Cristiano Ronaldo, coming off a tumultuous week off the field, had set up Ricardo Quaresma's opening goal for Portugal, and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez hit Mexico's equalizer just before halftime.

Months after the historic success and the total of three appearances in his country's FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, Quaresma is once again out to prove his worth over and over again at the Confederations Cup in Russian Federation.

Video review is on trial in Russian Federation and Infantino hopes it can be fast-tracked for approval at the 2018 World Cup to help referees overturn "clear errors" in game-changing situations such as penalty kicks awarded and offside rulings affecting goals.

Coach Fernando Santos has options ahead of Wednesday's game but as ever Portugal's fate could be in Ronaldo's hands. It could be an open game in Moscow between two teams who like to get forward.

Ronaldo's most expressive work came on the pitch and with the ball in play.

Chile dominated an entertaining, but goalless, first half as Eduardo Vargas saw his strike ruled out by the video assistant.

The team arguably don't have the elite level players of the very top national teams and certainly can't boast a Ronaldo, but Sunday's display backed up Osorio's thesis that El Tri can match any team in the world on its day.

The FIFA Confederations Cup is viewed by experts as a rehearsal for the organizers, with only one year to go to the FIFA World Cup.

New Roma recruit Hector Moreno pounced in stoppage time to snatch a 2-2 draw in Kazan, where Cedric Soares appeared to have sealed the points for the European champions.

"People are talking about this and I wanted to see it and take a photo of it", said Artem Maltsev, a 23-year-old Kazan resident standing outside the Portugal hotel.

He might have genuine competition for a share of the focus as the hosts face a critical hurdle in their own campaign; here, though, not even two uses of the video assistant referee system (VAR) could shift the curiosity away.
