Portugal goal against Mexico annulled after video review

A last gasp header by Hector Moreno helped Mexico secure a vital point against European Champions Portugal in the second match of Group A at the ongoing 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russian Federation.

There was a big match at the Confederations Cup in Russian Federation on Sunday as Portugal took on Mexico.

The result leaves both sides tied for second place in Group A, behind hosts Russian Federation who top the group after beating New Zealand 2-0 on Saturday in St. Petersburg.

The veteran forward was one of the standout performers in Portugal's Euro 2016 triumph previous year, and he seems to have continued his form for the Seleccao in the Confederations Cup as well.

Mexico weren't down and out though, demonstrating their incredible team spirit to storm back with a stoppage time equaliser, ensuring the two teams took a point each. But with just moments remaining in the encounter, Hector Moreno nodded home the equaliser to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw for Mexico.

Soares' goal had to be confirmed by video review but it eventually stood.

Both sides opted for a change after 57 minutes, as Giovani Dos Santos replaced Vela, while Gelson Martins came on for Nani.

The Euro 2016 winners kicked on again in the game's closing stages and Cedric netted with the help of a Hector Herrera deflection, but Moreno responded to earn a share of the spoils, with further talk of Ronaldo's uncertain club future sure to follow Portugal to their next match against Group A leaders Russian Federation.

"It is a little hard for the players", Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi said.

In the first half, a Portugal goal was ruled out for offside but it was only when the replays were shown that we saw that there was no infringement for the goal itself, but rather when the initial free kick was taken 15 minutes prior. We have to win, because if we win the next game we will be one step away from qualifying.

The uncertainty lasted far beyond the six-second target Federation Internationale de Football Association had set past year for officials to review their opinions. However, the VAR disallowed the goal for an offside infringement earlier in the move.

Portugal boss Fernando Santos on the result: "We played a team that has very good, technical players".

Ronaldo made a great run from near midfield to set up Quaresma's 34th-minute goal.
