Harman in front on crowded US Open leaderboard

The 1973 U.S. Open champion was participating in fan Q&As for Lexus and the U.S. Golf Association.

But it was his tie for fourth in the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 that enabled him to get a PGA Tour card.

Watching the action Saturday - he was on hand for a sponsor outing - Miller said the Open, with the leader at 12 under and 42 players under par, was unrecognizable.

Koepka broke away from a tight pack with three straight birdies on the back nine Sunday at Erin Hills and closed with a 5-under 67 to win the U.S. Open for his first major championship.

Hideki Matsuyama is second at 12 under. Having become the first ever to shoot 9 under par in a U.S. Open round, Thomas stands alone.

"The majors have a different feel and sound to the roars and to hear the crowd go insane when I holed that putt on 18 was really cool", said Thomas, whose back-to-back wins in Hawaii in January included an opening 59 in the Sony Open. "I'd love to have another one of those", Thomas said. "I'm not sure when it's going to sink in. If I continue playing well and make some putts here and there, hopefully late tomorrow with a couple of stretches coming down, we have a chance to win a golf tournament".

"It's going to be really fun". I competed in it twelve times and made the 60-man cut (and ties) for 36 holes eight times.

And it is another milestone in a remarkable start to 2017 for Thomas.

Koepka, a close friend and training partner of world number one and 2016 US Open champion Dustin Johnson, had only won one title on the PGA Tour since turning professional in 2012. The first couple of holes made a couple of bogeys and felt I rushed. Thomas has had an incredible golf season which included a 59 at the Sony Open.

"It's similar-type stuff - low round and history stuff, " Thomas said. Obviously, today I definitely had something to show for it.

"I think the biggest thing is not getting ahead of yourself. I'm like, 'Let's get to 8, let's get to 9, ' whatever it is".

What he did looked awfully familiar Sunday at Erin Hills, minus any mess involving the rules. Without a tour to play, he headed off to the European minor leagues, won three times to earn a promotion to the European Tour and won in Turkey. Not only that, if he keeps putting his clubs in the microwave to heat up, he may catch Rory McIlroy's record in 2011 of 16-under. We had one day like this, and the scores were more like an Open. "Whether it's 20-under or 20-over, as long as [USGA officials] want a good tournament and an action-packed leaderboard".

If his hot pink trousers were not enough, Thomas finished in style.

And with the tees moved up on the 15th hole to make it reachable, Thomas hit a 3-wood that rolled off the back slope of the green to 6 feet. And at the end of the day add them up and see how you do.

Reed, a fiery member of the US Ryder Cup team, said he had benefited from taking a more relaxed approach to the major. They say he is a very good putter. Furthermore, Erin Hills is still growing, but it will be a monster down the road, and it will undoubtedly host another major.

A memorabilia display in his father's pro shop is a tribute to Justin Thomas' skill, fearlessness and knack for the extraordinary. That was the kind of day it was and the kind of Open it is, as scores are unprecedentedly low and everyone seems fearless.

Spieth had five birdies and two bogeys in a final round that was particularly impressive given the rising winds at Erin Hills.
