Siri is getting a new voice, and the Mac is getting a new name.

HomePod will take on lower priced Amazon Echo and Google Home, which have had momentum in the arena of voice-controlled speakers capable of controlling smart appliances, fetching content from the internet and more.

Google Home is nipping at its heels. Apple said the speaker sound from the HomePod is of high quality and is also able to create virtual surround sound.

HomePod marks Apple's attempt to put a stake in the smart-home assistant hardware market, an area now dominated by Amazon's growing array of Alexa-running devices, like its Echo speaker, and Google's Home gadget, which runs Google Assistant. It replaces the 9.7-inch version, although Apple is keeping the 12.9-inch model, which it also refreshed at WWDC.

We all know that cellphones and driving can be a risky mix, and yet a quick glance at the sound of a ping can be irresistible to many motorists. The Echo is also looped into Amazon and is capable of accepting online product orders via voice command, which Siri can't handle. With HomePod, only after "Hey Siri" is recognized locally on the device will any information be sent to Apple servers, encrypted and sent using an anonymous Siri identifier.

Apple says that HomePod "just works", and that it has features such as spatial awareness to tune and better fill the room with sound. Another Safari feature will stop video from automatically playing on websites.

WWDC is Apple's annual pitch to software engineers to continue building programs for the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch.
