Apple's WWDC 2017: what to expect from the keynote

Apple continues to add new features to its Messaging app and to the iMessage platform.

We're just hours away from Apple's 2017 Worldwide Developer's Conference, and we're already starting to get more information about what we'll see, including what may be a new file management app for iOS 11.

It will cost US$349 and ship in December to the US, Britain and Australia.

Apple previewed its OS X Yosemite, its new operating system for desktop, which incorporated much of the visual features of the mobile OS, namely iOS. You can activate it with a wake word-"Hey Siri"-and ask an artificially intelligent assistant, Siri, to play music".

There is even speculation that a new iPad Pro could be unveiled fulfilling the appetite of anyone hungry for a shiny new Apple device. This functionality is included across all iOS devices and the Apple Watch.

Is it too late for Apple's speaker to be successful?

In technical terms, that means that if you are viewing fast moving motion, you get the improved screen refresh rate to make things "buttery smooth", but view something more static, and the iPad doesn't need to over exert itself and therefore doesn't gobble battery power either. Apple loves to keep users in its walled garden and the unveiling of the Siri speaker could lead to a lack of support for the Echo and Google Home in an attempt to push Apple enthusiasts towards its own device. Amazon sells the main version of the Echo for $180; Google's Home speaker goes for $130.

That's it! It's very similar to Google's speaker/assistant combo, Home, in this respect.

Apple also announced camera improvements, including more photo effects like long exposure mode and upgrades for better low-light photography.

Other features coming to the Mac include the ability to stop video from automatically playing on websites when using Safari.

The new design is slightly heavier than the previous 9.7-inch model, as you would expect, but in the hand, the weight difference is barely noticeable.

- A new iMac Pro targeted at professionals was announced. New iMacs released Monday are getting better displays and graphics capabilities.

Apple's Kevin Lynch speaks about the Apple Watch.

Taking direct aim at services like PayPal, Apple debuted peer-to-peer payments for Apple Pay in which users will be able to send money through the Messages app on iPhones.

Apple is also updating the operating software for its Apple Watch, including new watch faces, more personalized alerts that use machine learning to tailor information to you based on your routines and tastes.

There's also an official WWDC app available.

A redesigned control center will also allow you to easily change settings and switch your music, all in one place.

Tim Cook's team has had a rough ride over the past year, but in one way at least, Apple seems to be returning to past form: the leaks that have come to characterise the company recently have been few and far between, leaving plenty of room for surprise when the event starts at 6pm BST (1pm EDT, 10am PDT).
