Comedian Kathy Griffin news conference on Trump photo fallout

Griffin wondered what would it look like if his own insults were turned on him, so she donned a "pussy bow" blouse and snapped a parody images taking it to an absurd extreme. Griffin said five of her performances have been canceled this week.

Griffin said that she participated in the photo shoot because she wanted to make an "absurdist artsy statement" that was "over the top" to symbolize what she sees as America's demise under Trump.

The 56-year-old comedian also spoke about the tweets in response from Trump himself, calling the act "sick" and from the President's wife Melania, which focused on their son Baron's well-being.

Griffin, who teared up several other times during the emotional press conference, noted that while her apology for the controversial photo "absolutely stands", she shouldn't "have to die" for her mistake. The man strongly resembled President Donald Trump.

She went on to say: "I'm not afraid of Donald Trump". Now, all her troubles are suddenly due to the Trump family's hostilities, and she says she plans to continue to make fun of Trump in future appearances, assuming there will be future appearances on her calendar.

She did not mention being dumped as Squatty Potty's celebrity spokesperson.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie called Griffin "disgusting" and said the photo was "completely outrageous". "I consider her a friend and I'm glad she realized she crossed the line and apologized", said Franken, whose former career as a comedy writer also brought condemnation during his political life.

Her lawyer, Lisa Bloom, introduced her as an activist for women's rights and the LGBT community, adding she has traveled overseas and entertained the troops. Instead of blaming herself for the fall-out, she suggested it's Trump's fault, saying he "broke me".

He said he takes seriously that Minnesotans were upset by her behavior, which he characterized as "inappropriate and not something that should be anywhere" in the national discourse.

The Secret Service is reportedly investigating Griffin.

"But I didn't grab anybody's you-know-what", she added, referencing Trump's "grab them by the p--" Access Hollywood tape. The comic has come under fire for taking part in the photo shoot, which led CNN to fire her from the network's New Year's Eve coverage.

"If you don't stand up, you get run over", Griffin said.
