Bentley announced his resignation in a speech given not long after he'd been arrested Monday afternoon at Montgomery County Jail on misdemeanor charges, his arrest part of a deal that ended impeachment hearings.

"I explained to Gov. Bentley it would be a crime if he has used state resources to facilitate a relationship or if he used campaign funds to facilitate the relationship", Collier told reporters at a news conference. The former governor's lawyers had said the money was for legal representation as the Alabama Ethics Commission considered the appropriateness of gubernatorial staffers, including Mason, being paid by outside sources instead of being on state payroll. But one thing is for certain: The GOP is in no danger of losing its grip on state politics.

"Not to be overly flattering, but you don't tell Kay anything", Former Republican Party Chairman Marty Connors responded when asked if party powerbrokers told her to switch to the lower ballot race in 2010. In the history of the United States, only 38 women have served as governor-22 Democrats and 16 Republicans. His administration was engulfed for months by questions surrounding his alleged romance with a female aide almost 30 years his junior. Mike Hubbard was removed as speaker of the state House after being convicted of ethics charges.

A zealous Christian conservative who was elected Alabama's chief justice and then installed a Ten Commandments monument in the rotunda of Alabama's main judicial building, Roy Moore was ousted in 2003 after ignoring a federal court order to remove the monument.

Robert Bentley, 74, who is married and a former baptist deacon, struck up a relationship with 45-year-old Rebekah Caldwell Mason, a married mother of three.

The report also alleged improper use of state aircraft, and possible irregularities with Bentley's links to companies that paid Mason's salary as manager of his reelection campaign.

Jon Mason, the husband of ex-governor Robert Bentley's alleged mistress Rebekah Caldwell Mason, was sacked from his state job, AL.com reports. His resignation propelled Ivey, the sitting Lieutenant Governor, to the state's top job, as dictated by the line of succession spelled out in the Alabama Constitution. "We got to know what's been going on so we can make good decisions". "Of course we are really proud", he said. Would you join us by making a donation today to this important work?

There are a variety of figures and officials directly tied to Bentley's sex and ethics scandal who will face additional scrutiny going forward, and that includes Sen. He pledged he would not take a paycheck until Alabama reached full employment, or an overall unemployment rate of 5 percent. "I think she will be a steady hand for state government".

"Alabama has a traditionally cynical political culture in which the people seem to neither think much of nor expect much from their leaders", he said.
